“ My fiancé booked omakase dinner here for my birthday and it was an amazing experience. Chef Eli was so nice and was a pleasure to talk to throughout our dinner. We enjoyed the setup of the experience. We booked 5:15pm and there was one other couple. So that was one chef per party which I think worked out well since we didn't feel rushed and they were pretty attentive. The omakase set was 18 course for $185 which we thought was fair, and we were stuffed at the end. It was about a 2 hour experience and everything was paced well. Everything was delicious. Some of my favorites were the toro and caviar, amaebi, uni, kohada, and toro hand roll. Chef gave me extra uni for my birthday which was so nice of him. He also shared that he actually made the pecan mochi cake for the menu which was a perfect end to dinner. Not too sweet and the textures worked nicely together. Sushi Ran rotates some of the offerings on the omakase menu every week. The firefly squid was a new addition for our day's tasting menu which was also new in general for us. Fiancé and I have been to a handful of omakase places so it's nice when we find out about new fishes/seafood. Sushi Ran definitely gets packed and they have lots of indoor/outdoor seating. Their regular menu looks pretty good too. Thank you for a wonderful birthday dinner! ”
“ Lovely ambiance and friendly wait staff. Fresh food and great tasting options. I would eat here again! ”
“ Has been good forever. I went back last year for my birthday, after having not gone in at least a decade and it's still good. Great service and sushi, a nice romantic cute little time. I expressly recommend not going during peak date-night hours. Try a Tuesday evening, something like that. You'll love it. ”
“ Great birthday dinner. The food tonight was above par. Service was friendly and attentive. The area we sat in was chill. Sushi Ran still holds up well after all these years. ”
“ We were traveling through SF, and stopped by, decided to get take-out for the night. The owner was so friendly, during our wait, he even came over and chatted, explained to us the history of the kadomatsu plant for celebrating new years. The quality of the food is definitely five stars. However, a truthful suggestion from the take-out perspective is that the way the foods are packaged needs adjustment. When we received the paper bag, cold sushi containers were stacked together with hot udon soup container. The tempura box had no corners cut, so the steam trapped inside made the tempura pieces soggy by the time we were able to sit down and eat. If we were local, this lovely restaurant would be a frequent spot for us. The ambience looked romantic and cozy from the outside. And if we were regulars, I'm sure the greeter would have warmed up to us over time. Overall, still a very great restaurant. Would love to try the sit down experience next time. ”
“ Reliable neighborhood stalwart. IMO, best thing on the menu isn't even sushi, but rather the cod. It is excellent -- comes out super warm, extremely buttery, and bursting with miso flavor. Served only with arugula, it's a minimalist dish because it can get away with it. So good. For sushi, most recently ordered the kaisen futo maki, which isn't my understanding of a futo maki in the traditional sense, but is a wide roll filled with a few fresh fish. It's excellent if you like a big, fish-forward roll without all the sauce, toppings, etc that often accompany "special" rolls. Ambiance is super pleasant -- tucked away on Caledonia, the "local's main drag" of Sausalito, it's good for a casual dinner or something a little more upscale, if you're looking for that. Admittedly, you don't need to ever leave San Francisco if you're looking for good sushi. Options abound. But if you're trying to spend an evening in Sausalito and need somewhere to eat, this place is a must-hit. ”
“ My friend and I were in for lunch today and overall, we had a great experience. Initially, I was disappointed because we had planned on eating at the sushi bar because we wanted an omakase experience that I've read so much about on Yelp, but when we checked in for our reservation and requested to sit at the bar, we were told they don't do that anymore. So just a warning that if you're looking to do omakase, they no longer offer it here. But we sat at a table and everything was wonderful. I ordered mostly a la carte nigiri and the quality fish was amazing and so fresh. I also got the agedashi tofu, chawanmushi and we shared the shrimp dumplings. Everything was seasoned well and delicious! SO MUCH UMAMI GOODNESS. Service was great. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Our food was thoughtfully coursed out. I would definitely go back and recommend! ”
“ Beautiful weather to eat sushi outdoor at a beautiful sushi restaurant. I tried: 1. Clam miso soup 2. Chef's choice sashimi set 3. Seaweed salad 4. Seasonal mixed greens 5. Soba noodles with tempura ”
“ Sushi Ran offers a cozy and intimate dining experience, perfect for a romantic dinner or a quiet meal with friends. They also have an outdoor seating area. While the service was friendly, the pacing between courses was quite slow, which detracted slightly from the overall experience. We dined at Sushi Ran during SF Restaurant Week. The seaweed salad, while fresh, was a bit too crunchy for my preference. However, the Surf and Turf was a standout. The wagyu steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and tender, and the red miso sauce complemented it beautifully. The miso-glazed black cod was also a highlight. The fish was cooked to a flaky perfection, and the glaze added a rich, savory flavor. The toffee cake with spiced caramel and ginger gelato was a delightful conclusion to the meal. The warm cake paired perfectly with the cold, creamy gelato, creating a delightful contrast of textures and flavors. We also sampled the tempura oysters, which were crispy and light, with a perfectly cooked oyster inside. Their nigiri was also fresh and each nigiri included a thick cut of the fish. Also, $15 for some fresh Hokkaido uni was a pretty good deal (usually restaurants charge MP for uni but Sushi Ran had a fixed price). Overall, Sushi Ran is a solid choice. While the service could be improved, the quality of the food was good. ”
“ Reputed to be one of the best Japanese sushi restaurants in the US we decided to give it a go for dinner. The place has been around for over 30 years and I had eaten here some twenty years ago. It was so good I came twice within a couple days. It's grown considerably since then, with two sections of indoor seating and a good amount of outdoor seating too. Parking can be tough yet we found a spot easily in a side street, just be cautious of posted regulations. Having made a reservation a couple weeks ago we were immediately seated and I was surprised how crowded it was at just after 5pm on a Friday. Unfortunately, we were crammed into a small table, indoors, right on a main entry point into the place. It wasn't all that comfortable or pleasant, also being right up against a heater. We did have a somewhat close view of the sushi bar, which is always interesting. The menu is complex and extensive. In many ways you need to know Japanese cuisine and all its refinements and nuances. I started with the miso soup and my hetter half had the mixed green salad. The miso was quite good with a big chunk of tofu. It is quite hearties than the clear miso soups you typically get in mainstream Japanese restaurants. The salad was a definite standout. I tried some and the greens were super fresh and the dressing amazing, light with a touch of lemon. We ordered the Premium Sushi Platter and a Spicy Tuna Roll. The presentations were beautiful, brought on unique long platters. Each piece was carefully explained and overall the freshness and taste was quite good. I wouldn't say it was the best I ever had and doesn't compare to what you get from Nabu as a comparison. Yet, quite competent, keeping in mind that I am no where near an afficionado or expert of Japanese cuisine. The Spicy Tuna Roll was so good that we did order a second. To accompany my meal I had a 5oz glass of the house sake. It was absolutely smooth and refreshing, a good choice for the fish. The sake menu is beyond comprehension with the number of choices. Way out of my league. Service was competent and attentive, but somewhat stiff and not all that personable. It felt very formal. It was amazing to see the number of dishes and variety that came out of the kitchen. The price point is quite high, yet undoubtedly commensurate to the quality level. With tip it came to about $90. each, so over $180. total, more than I have had for as good as sushi meal in the recent past. It's certainly a popular place and I would return to be more adventurous. The overall atmosphere is pleasant enough and there are certainly enough awards on the wall to make a point. ”
